Life went on as normal. A few weeks went by. John left his home for the train station at 7 am sharp, caught the train and plugged in his headphones for the 45 minute commute. This was his time alone, from work and life. John has been married for half his life. She was a working professional as well, and there was a dog and cat at home who substituted for children.
his favorite podcast came on. The host was a speculative investor who had intelligent analysis to share about the economy and the opportunities out there to make a buck.
“If you’ve never looked at underwater mining companies, I’d suggest taking a look. We only know 1% of the earth’s surface, there’s plenty of resources lurking just below.”
PARK AND GROVE. NEXT STOP: CROAK AND HARDEN.
The train stopped, and John noticed because he’d made the mistake of sitting inside the aisle. A man in an overcoat day right next to him in the crowded train. John looked up to get a better glance after having been glued to his phone.
“heeeeeey buddy!” Raphael offered a hearty handshake.
“Raphael! Holy shit, how are you man?”
“I’m well. Look, the results are in. You’ve made it past the pre-leminary stage. We just have a couple of tests left. Are you interested?”
“…yes? How many tests? What are they for?”
“3 tests. Based off of your initial answers we think you have the right psychological makeup. Now we must test your decision making and leadership capabilities.”
“Okay, when do I start? Are they online?”
CROAK AND HARDEN. NEXT AND LAST STOP IS ONION STATION.
“Sorry buddy, I’ve got to go. The first test begins now! Good luck.”
Raphael stepped off the train. One more stop until Onion Station.
“what do you mean it starts now?”
John had one stop until Onion Station. He was supposed to get off there and head to work! Was there someone watching him now?
The train continued on until Onion Station. John was no longer listening to his podcast and was looking furtively around. He figured that something else would probably happen once he got off at Onion Station. He was right.
